Corfu is situated in the Mediterranean Sea just a few kilometres off the coast of Albania. It is the northernmost and second largest of the Ionian islands. With plenty of winter rain, Corfu is one of the greenest islands in all of Greece. The lush landscapes also include many kumquat trees. Originally from Asia, these citrus fruits have been cultivated in the north of the island for one hundred years. Kumquats resemble oranges but are much smaller. The fruits, including the edible peel, are rich in vitamin C and have a sourish-sweet flavour with just a little bitterness. Alexandra and Nikos Guliumis only started cultivating kumquats ten years ago. Today, they tend 300 trees. For the future, Nikos is hoping to focus more on direct marketing and is on the lookout for new customers. His wife Alexandra is a civil engineer. During harvest season, she takes time off work to help nourish the harvesting team. Whatever the occasion, she loves to experiment with the fresh-picked kumquats. Her recipes include a salad with kumquats as well as kumquat as a seasoning. She combines the citrus fruits with fish, and her cakes often include kumquat jam. She also makes a ‘tsigarelli’ – a Corfiot specialty made from sautéed wild herbs.
