High School Students Run a Whole Pow Wow?!

Firstly, I made the mistake of naming Northern Mix as Mix Company during the intertribals. Sorry guys! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flagstaff High School Pow Wow 2025 was a huge success—especially for the students who organized it! Hey everyone, Aaron Tsosie here—the person behind the camera. Since the New Year, I’ve been taking YouTube more seriously, and this is one of the pow wows I’ve been looking forward to the most. I had such a good time covering it last year, and the anticipation for this year’s pow wow only grew as the date approached. It was organized by the students of Flagstaff High School, and they truly nailed it—with just a couple small issues I hope they can improve next year. Let me start by saying: this was a cash-only event, which definitely caught me off guard. Nowhere on the flyer did it mention that cash would be the only option for entry or food. I arrived later than planned—around 6:15pm—due to a snowstorm and a 30-minute traffic standstill between Flagstaff and Phoenix. I was rushing to get set up, and one of the councelors were kind enough to let me in so I could pay later. That saved me! Because I only brought $20 in cash, I couldn’t afford a full meal. I used what I had on entry, a Rice Krispy treat from our local favorite, Tillie (shoutout to her for always showing up with the best brownies and Rice Cripies!), and a small bowl of beans with two $1 coffees. The prices were a little high—$10 for a Navajo taco, $8 for Navajo nachos—but I know fundraising can be tricky and there’s probably more to it than I understand. That said, a card reader, a seperate box office for cards, and a faster line for cash only at the door, would go a long way for next year. Another thing: the gym was really hot and stuffy. I was sweating even though it was snowing outside. As soon as intertribals started, I had to ditch my jacket. Hopefully next year they’ll be able to improve the ventilation or adjust the temperature. Now onto the highlights. Rick Yazzie was on the mic and ran the show smoothly as always—backed by his team with Wardance Live on sound and Pinetop Tabulations. I’ve seen Rick at many events, and he brings professionalism and heart to every single one. And I can’t say enough about the students behind this pow wow. The Flagstaff High School Native American Club deserves all the praise. This event wouldn’t happen without them. And special shoutout to Madi Benally, club president, who confidently asked for the mic so she could speak to the crowd. When she took the mic, that showed just how passionate and proud she is to represent her community. Big respect! There was zero dead space between songs—this pow wow moved fast and flowed well. It was a short and sweet Friday evening gathering, and I can’t wait to upload Saturday’s full-day pow wow next. Thanks so much for watching and supporting my journey.
