Bringing 3D Printing to Industrial Scale | John Hart | TEDxBerkshires

NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... For more than 30 years, adoption of various 3D printing technologies has grown steadily - and now 3D printing has been used in tens of millions of consumer products, medical and dental devices, jet engines, and more. Yet, a new architecture - of both the 3D printing process, and the complete productions system - is needed for true industrialization of 3D printing. A. John Hart shares this vision through the story of VulcanForms, a MIT-born company that is completing the world's highest throughput additive manufacturing facility in Devens, MA. Co-Founder and Director of VulcanForms & Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). John is also Director of the MIT Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity and the MIT Center for Additive and Digital Advanced Production Technologies (APT). John’s research and teaching activities at MIT focus on the science and technology of production, including additive processes, automation, advanced materials, and data science. He has been recognized by the United States NSF, ONR, AFOSR, DARPA, ASME, and SME, by two R&D 100 awards, and received the MIT Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching in Mechanical Engineering. John created the world’s first massive open online course on manufacturing processes (MIT 2.008x on edX) and leads MIT’s online additive manufacturing curriculum which has educated thousands of engineers since its launch in 2018. He is also a Co-Founder of Desktop Metal and a Board Member of Carpenter Technology Corp This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
