Diet and Depression: The SMILES Trial | Physicians Association for Nutrition

Does our diet affect our mood? What kind of impact does the food we eat have on our mental health? In this video, Cirus takes a deep dive into the SMILES Trial which was the first-ever randomized controlled trial to specifically shine light upon the question "If I improve my diet, will my mental health improve?". The results might be surprising. Nutritional psychology is a relatively new and very exciting field of research. For some years data from observational trials indicated that diets centered around unrefined plant foods might have the potential to improve mood or even lift depressive symptoms. If you are interested in the results from the SMILES Trial and in the area of nutritional psychology in general, check out the sources for this video and our suggestions for further reading. Hint: two more interesting randomized controlled trials have been published since the SMILES trial. ---- Helpful resources for mental health support in English ----    • I had a black dog, his name was depre...   https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/... https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/... https://mhfa.com.au/covid-19 https://mhanational.org https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/advi... https://www.mind.org.uk/information-s... https://www.psychiatry.org/patients-f... ---- Helpful resources for mental health support in German ---- https://www.deutsche-depressionshilfe... https://www.suizidprophylaxe.de https://www.frnd.de https://dgbs.de https://www.selbsthilfenetz.de https://www.nakos.de https://www.mhfa-ersthelfer.de/de/ SOURCES: Jacka FN, O’Neil A, Opie R, Itsiopoulos C, Cotton S, Mohebbi M, et al.
