In this video, I will share with you the top 10 things you need to know before visiting Cambodia. #1: We Use Two Forms of Cambodian Currency After arriving in Cambodia, you don’t need to withdraw from the Cambodian Riel. You can use U.S. dollars everywhere for everything. For a meal at a restaurant, you can pay U.S. dollars; For a tuk-tuk to Angkor Wat, you can pay U.S. dollars; for buying a sarong to wear at a temple, you can still pay U.S. dollars. So, just forget about the Cambodian Riel unless you’d like it for souvenir reasons. #2 Make Sure to Cover your Knees and Shoulders As Buddhism is the primary religion here, it’s offensive to the culture if you walk into a temple complex with your knees and shoulders showing, especially for women. #3 Plan for At Least two Days at the Angkor Wat The Angkor Wat temple complex is enormous and much bigger than you may expect. It takes quite a bit of time to wander around all of it. We suggest getting the 3-day pass over the 1-day pass. One day is not enough time. #4 Do Not Drink the Tap Water Avoid drinking tap water. It’s better to drink the bottled water. #5 Don’t Buy from the Children You may run into the children asking you to buy their postcards, gum, or trinkets to help them pay for school. So, don’t buy anything from the children on the streets. #6 Head Down to the Beaches of Cambodia It’s best to plan more time in Cambodia so that you can head down to the coast. Just relax on the beautiful beaches with your toes in the sand. It’s definitely a nice break from the craziness of the cities like Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. #7 It’s Easy to Get a Visa: Just Need $35 and a Picture All you need are $35 USD in cash and a passport-size picture to get the Cambodia visa. #8 Expect Hot, Humid, and Sunny Weather Make sure to pack plenty of bottled water and sunscreen, as it’s hot and sunny when traveling around Cambodia. Water is the most important thing to pack when visiting tourist sites. You need to keep hydrated. #9 Rainy Season is Really Not Bad Some say that traveling to Cambodia or the region of Southeast Asia during the rainy season is terrible, but actually, it is not. In this season, there are no crowds. It is likely to rain every day, but the showers only last for about 20 minutes to a half hour. Then the rest of the day is just clear skies. #10 Tips are Not Expected but Are Appreciated in Cambodia If a hotel employee, tuk-tuk driver, or cab driver goes out of their way to help you with bags or recommendations for the area, feel free to tip, but it is not expected.
