IIT-Madras fosters an active entrepreneurial culture with strong support through curriculum, student forums, tinkering labs and Technology Business Incubators. IITM Incubation Cell (IITMIC) is the nodal incubator of IIT-Madras, while there are also three sector-specific incubators: IITM’s Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI), Bioincubator & MedTech incubator. All four incubators are located within IIT Madras Research Park. Under the aegis of IITMIC, today IIT-Madras has emerged as India’s leading Deep Technology Startup hub with Innovation (founded on science/engineering breakthroughs) & Impact as key differentiators/drivers. With over 190 startups incubated by IITMIC and sector-specific incubators, 150,000 sq. ft. has been allocated in the Research Park to accommodate the growing number of new entrepreneurial ventures. The companies span the breadth of deep tech areas in globally critical domains, and are founded by IITM members (faculty, staff, students and alumni) and external entrepreneurs (40%). Over 60 IITM faculty members are involved with startups as co-founders, minority shareholders and/or mentors, underlining how the ecosystem is catalyzing the translation of our cutting-edge research to industry and society at large. IITM startups have received wide recognition through prestigious forums including the Economic Times Startup Awards, MIT young Innovator, Takeda and Time Next Gen., raised over Rs 1400 Crore in external angel/VC investments, generated Rs 170 Crore cumulative revenue (in FY 2018-19) and directly created over 2500 jobs. IITMIC was ranked as India’s top incubator by Entrepreneur India magazine and as the country's top emerging Technology Business Incubator by Govt. of India (2017). More recently IITM has been tagged as a haven for startups and institute for innovation by and ET (2017) and Forbes India (2018) in their exclusive features.
