IRAN: TEHRAN: NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATIONS

(11 Feb 1995) Farsi/Natsot Several hundred thousand people gathered in the centre of Tehran Saturday to celebrate the anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution. President Hashemi Rafsanjani told the crowd the power of the revolution was invincible, and criticised the West for its mistaken perceptions of Islam. Sixteen years ago, a Shiite Muslim cleric named Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini overthrew the Shah of Iran. He became a national hero and a forsworn enemy of the United States and Israel at once. He died six years ago, but his work lives on. And every year, the deceased Islamic revolutionary is remembered. In Iran, today is National Day. A day of parades, speeches and religious fervour. President Rafsanjani told the rally that the West is wrong to believe Islamic fundamentalism has replaced communism as its main threat. He also condemned the West's belief that Iran is meddling in other country's political affairs. These comments follow NATO's chief Willy Claes and US Republican Newt Gingrich's warnings that Islamic totalitarianism now poses a the most serious threat to the west. On the domestic front, he told the festive crowd that the power of the revolution is like a wave that never ebbs. Iran, he proclaimed, is ready and armed for any struggle. Iran is still trying to recover economically after its eight year war with Iraq.
