This physics tutorial uses the principle of moments to calculate the distance of a load being carried by a crane. The principle of moments says that if an object is in equilibrium (balanced), then the anticlockwise moments = clockwise moments about any chosen pivot. A moment is a turning force given by the snappy formula: Moment = Force x perpendicular distance from the line of action of the force to the pivot.
