January 31, 1989 - This was not Isiah Thomas' first encounter with Bill Cartwright's elbows and certainly not the last. But in overtime, with the Pistons in control and Michael Jordan bolted to the bench (having fouled by committing all six of his fouls in the fourth quarter), Thomas encountered an emotional crossroads. Having just absorbed a wayward blow to the temple by way of Cartwright's gangly malfeasance, Thomas' initial impulse-driven response was to retaliate toward Cartwright directly. But with 32 points already to his name as the team's primary catalyst on this particular evening, teammates Bill Laimbeer and Dennis Rodman intervened. Still stewing, blood streaming down his right cheekbone and in need of an outlet, that's when Thomas was met by Pistons assistant coach Brendon Malone (father of former Denver Nuggets coach Mike Malone). As Malone began to speak, Thomas briefly grabbed Malone around the throat with both hands before quickly relented. As later reported by the Washington Post, the unflinching Malone never felt as though he was in danger: "And Detroit assistant coach Brendan Malone swears that Isiah Thomas knew exactly what he was doing when he put his hands on Malone's throat last week during the Pistons-Bulls game. Malone was in town last weekend scouting the Washington-Milwaukee game, and he said Thomas was demonstrating his anger with Bulls' center Bill Cartwright. Cartwright had just sent Thomas flying with an elbow, producing a pretty bad cut by Thomas' eyebrow. When he came out on court to calm Thomas down, Malone said, Thomas had a few choice words about Cartwright and then said words to the effect of "he makes me so mad I could . . ." choke him. And that's what Thomas acted out on Malone, who never flinched. Malone said he knew he was in no danger, and that Thomas thanked him later for keeping him from getting thrown out of the game . . ." Thomas, who missed no game time following the elbow, played 51 minutes and finished with 34 points and 3 steals in a 104-98 overtime win.
