Divyesh's parents Swati and Shailendra suffer from bilateral severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss since birth and cannot speak. When Divyesh was 5 months old, other family members noticed that he was not responding to sounds around him. At this point Divyesh's maternal aunt, Chitra, decided to take up the responsibility of bringing up this child. She took Divyesh to Hinduja Hospital for a BERA test which confirmed her fears regarding Divyesh's hearing loss. From then on began a long arduous process of testing and confirming the hearing loss, and then fitting him with hearing aids. But Divyesh had a bilateral severe to profound hearing loss which could not be benefited with hearing aids. They visited Dr.Milind Kirtane who advised a cochlear implant surgery. The cost of the intervention was very high and unaffordable to them as it was almost close to Rs.6 lakhs. With help from philanthropists and donors they managed to get the surgery done when he was about 2 years old. After a year he started talking. Divyesh was sent to normal play group and nursery so that he could interact with his peers. Today he is studying in a school for normal kids and is well adjusted there. He is a great actor, has done a couple of Marathi films and, is like any other normal hearing child of his age. He had a great outcome only because he was identified and intervened very early on with help from people contributing towards his implant, with excellent family support from his extended family, especially his aunt, who is his pillar of strength and unconditional support.
