The first settlement on the territory of the modern city dates back to the 9th century. In 1067, "The Tale of Bygone Years" Minsk was mentioned when the sons of the Kiev Prince, Yaroslav the Wise, appeared beneath its walls.... When these photographs were taken, Minsk was within the territory of the Soviet Union and was awarded the title of Hero City in 1974 in recognition for the city's heroic defence during the Great Patriotic War when the city was occupied by Nazi forces and mostly destroyed. Following the end of the War, Minsk was rebuilt, but not reconstructed. The historical centre was replaced in the late 1940s and 1950s by grand buildings, broad avenues and wide squares.
