The beautiful island of Corsica is within waving distance of Italy. Many beaches offer windsurfing, kite-surfing and boating; there's hiking in the beautiful mountains and historic ruins to visit, and a clutch of Michelin-starred restaurants for gastronomes to get excited about. If you want to witness something a bit out there, then head to Sonkajärvi in Finland for the Wife Carrying Championships. Yes, you heard that right! There once was a man called Herkko Ronkainen who wanted his gang of thieves to be the strongest, so he tested them by sending them to pillage women from nearby villages, covering various forest obstacles on the way. Don’t worry though, as today it’s a lot more laid, and the winner even receives his wife’s body weight in beer! From the 6th to the 23rd of July, Nice is the place to be! The Avignon festival runs throughout this time and is one of the most important contemporary performing arts events in the world. July 14th is Bastille day, when the country comes together to remember the storming of the Bastille, which marked the start of the French Revolution. Having just completed an epic road trip through Italy, we can't recommend it enough. We started in Venice and worked out way up South through Tuscany to Rome, via Florance and Pisa! I have nothing but great things to say, about Italy! The weather was fantastic, the food amazing, and the people are super friendly! Every city we visited had something really interesting about it. Hire a car, go and do it! You won't regret it! Vancouver has it all, it’s a hub of culture, surrounded by beautiful scenery, and in July it’s host to a range of festivals! The Folk Music Festival on July 14th, Music by the sea, and Rock the Shores both on the 20th. And if that wasn’t enough it’s Canada's sesquicentennial Anniversary of Confederation - they’re celebrating their 150th anniversary and as a result all National Parks are free for the whole year!
