The Philippines , where the past and future collide and co exist. Where you see modern tractors working along side ox and cattle pulled plows. Where you see fishermen using an old jug as a reel yet carrying with them a smart phone. Where electric well pumps are everywhere yet the bucket on a rope or hand pump is still used daily. A collision of two eras. A deep part of my soul loves the old hand operated tools and machines. Leavers, handles, cranks, gears and fulcrums converting your arm and leg motions into something powerful, beautiful and useful. My old well pump was installed by myself only years past when we bought this property. I measured where the house would sit and I wanted the pump to be placed permanently and prominently for years and years of use and display. A proud piece of the past that the new generations could continue and see here at this modern home. It has been one of the most used items on this property. Daily hearing its handle rattle ( in fact I hear it now as I am writing this) as it pumps the earths real treasure up for us to use in our daily lives here. It sits there waiting to do it's task oblivious and unaffected by the plagues it's modern replacements have like power grid issues and faulty switches. I watch how we gather around it pumping water like a happy center piece. We get pails and pump water and all rinse off in the yard after a hard days work or a salty swim. Smiling, laughing and discussing the days events to the rhythm of the pumps mechanisms making music. This old pump has seen lots of abuse during the construction of this place. Concrete splattered and coating splattered on it, the workers banging buckets against it to clean them out, lack of grease and care, wires and cords tied on it like splints of it's worn tired parts. Today I decided that it's time to give that old pump the attention it deserves. I easily could have went to the hardware store and just bought a new one but this one is the one that served us so well and she deserves more respect than just being discarded. We proudly brought her back in this episode and each day she has been used again with such pleasure by everyone. Guest from abroad love seeing her and to curiously pull the handle and see the magic she delivers. She was the first here on this lot and she now stands proud like monument here in our yard.
