Dietary fiber or fiber in the diet is most important component of a well balanced diet. Earlier in 1970s or 80s the fiber content in the diet was high and hence the incidences of colon related diseases were lower. As the fiber in the food or dietary fiber content decreased to due to processing of food has lead to increased frequency of overweight, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, diverticulitis, colon cancer. Dietary fibers or fiber in food, or high fiber in diet can prevent overweight, obesity, development of diabetes mellitus and hypertension. There are two kind of dietary fibers, soluble dietary fiber and insoluble dietary fiber. Soluble dietary fiber will have gel like consistency when mixed with water and leas to increased gastric emptying time, delayed glucose absorption, decreased cholesterol absorption. Dietary fiber is not digested in the small intestine. In the large intestine soluble fiber partly undergo fermentation into short chain fatty acids like acetate, butyrate and propionate. Insoluble fiber is not fermented and it adds bulk to stool and prevents constipation and hence development of hemorrhoids and fissures. Dietary fibers also acts as prebiotics.
