I have NEVER experienced a growing season, in the garden, that did not have aphids. Aphids are soft-bodied insects that use their piercing mouthparts to suck nutrient-rich liquid out of plants. The usually occur in colonies on the underside of plant leaves. Infestations of aphids can cause damage to plants. The leaves of the plant can curl, discolor, and/or become stunned, leaving the plant stressed. Sooty mold, a fungal growth may appear where the aphids excrete a sticky substance called honeydew. Flowers and/or fruits and vegetables can become distorted and deformed. Aphids may also transmit disease between plants. Eliminate the aphid invasion! You can do this by introducing beneficial insects into your garden. You can also spray the infested areas with insecticidal soap, neem oil, horticultural oil, or water and dish soap. If it is a light infestation, you can also spray the area with a blast of water from the hose. In this video I spray Spinosad Soap (not an endorsement) on the underside of the leaves, making sure to get the spray on the aphids. Spinosad causes damage to the insect's nervous system leading to paralysis and death. It usually takes 1 -2 days to work. Once you notice that most of the aphids are dead, spray the plant with a jet of water from a hose to remove the remainder of the aphids. Repeat as necessary until you no longer have an aphid infestation. Since we are out in the garden, I wanted to update you guys on the progress of the container vegetables that were planted six weeks ago. I also added in a few extra container fruits and veggies that were not in the original video. I am always proud when I see the progress of food growing in the garden. I'm sure I get this trait from Grandpa George. He felt the same sense of pride while growing food.
