Hello The Way We Wore Fans, We are happy to share with you a fun episode on glamorous, colorful, pin-up swimwear. Swimwear became a big industry in the state of California, most of the mills in California were primarily making underwear and knits but the mills also began creating swimsuits, there are many brands that emerged in California such as Cole of California, Catalina, and Deweese Designs. Fred Cole became a major contributor in making swimsuits more glamorous, which led to movie stars modeling and advertising the latest fashions and innovative fabrics of the period. Cole partnered with Esther Williams creating some of her swimsuits under Helen Rose and Irene Lentz direction for her films. Marilyn Monroe became a marketing sensation for Catalina swimsuits, and Deweese was known for her elaborate designs that graced national beauty pageants. Other brands like Jantzen, Koret of California, Tina Leser, and Rose Marie Reid designed fun graphic, bold, patterned styles that referenced the California Hollywood/Malibu lifestyle. Swimsuits became a large part of pop culture due to film and television, Rose Marie Reid designed the swimsuits for Sandra Dee in Gidget, Norma Kamali designed the famous Farah Fawcette bathing suit. High-end designers embraced swimwear as well, Jacque Heim who is credited for designing the first two-piece, but it was Louis Reard who was heralded for the design, which he named "The Bikini" named after the islands where atom bomb testing took place in the surrounding waters.
