Mid of discarded Syrian government flag STORYLINE: Armed Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels gathered for a show of strength in Ras al-Ayn in Syria's al-Hasaka province near the Turkish border on Sunday, claiming they had beaten back Kurdish fighters from the city. Speaking from the Syrian side, one FSA fighter at first called for all Syrian refugees on the Turkish side to return home and help save the Ras al-Ayn region from the Kurdish group PYD (Democratic Union Party). He later said the Kurdish fighters had gone and the clashes were over. Kurdish and Arab groups cooperated to oust Syrian regime forces from the ethnically mixed area earlier this month, but they have since frequently clashed over control of the city. Recently the FSA brought extra rebels to the area from the other cities in Syria. When government forces withdrew from Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria in July, they were quickly replaced by Kurdish PYD fighters who would then battle rebels when they pushed their way into predominantly Kurdish areas. The Kurdish group is affiliated with the PKK, rebels fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast region of Turkey. In a symbolic gesture, one of the FSA fighters flew a rebel flag from the top of a nearby building, discarding the official Syrian flag as he did so.
