This video is dedicated to Marshal Józef Klemens Piłsudski, the Polish solider, revolutionary, and politician who served as First Marshal of Poland, its de facto leader during most of the Second Polish Republic (1918-1939), and is widely considered the Father of modern, independent Poland. Born when Poland was ruled by Russia, Pilsudski dedicated his life to freeing Poland from foreign rule. When World War One began, he fought alongside the Central Powers against Russia, which eventually led to the establishment of an independent Poland. He then defended Poland from an invasion by the Soviet Union in the early twenties. Following this, he toppled the contemporary Polish government and became the leader of Poland. During this time, Pilsudski worked hard to realize his dream of a strong and multiethnic Poland. However, just four years after his death in 1935, Poland was sadly invaded and partitioned by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, only to emerge from World War Two as a satellite state under Soviet Control. Poland finally regained independence from Russian imperialism in 1989. Today, Pilsudski is still held in high regard among Poles.
