Over a period of 60 years, the state forcibly sterilized over 2,600 Oregonians. From 1923 to 1983, Oregon law allowed for compulsory sterilization of those deemed unfit for reproduction. It was part of a broader eugenics movement to remove “undesirable” individuals from the gene pool. Today, some Oregonians still live with the consequences of that outdated law. In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), OPB is joining with other public media partners around the country to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. The “Move To Include” initiative highlights the unique and diverse stories of people with disabilities. These stories and additional resources are available to teachers, families, and students through the PBS LearningMedia collection. Move To Include is sponsored locally by Relay Resources.
