Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Thomas Gainsborough are some of the UK’s most famous writers and artists who once graced the ballroom floor of the Bath Assembly Rooms. They were among an international set who came here to mix with people from all pillars of society. And they’d dance beneath the glittering glow of the crystal chandeliers illuminated by candlelight. In this video, get a behind-the-scenes look inside this Georgian building, cared for by the National Trust, as the experts are called in to clean and conserve the 250-year-old chandeliers. All 10 will be individually dismantled, piece by piece, before being packed and shipped off to be restored. It's a well-planned process, and one that the conservators are highly trained in to handle with care. And it's a far cry from that classic episode of Only Fools and Horses that may spring to mind when it comes to dismantling a chandelier in a historic home. In this video, Terry Brotheridge, Chandelier Specialist, describes what’s at stake: “These are probably the best chandeliers in the world. They are certainly the oldest and largest suite of chandeliers from this period from the 18th century. And the glass is a very fine quality, using the best lead and the best sand, so you get really good colours and rainbows all over the walls when the sun shines through the windows.” “Some of them can be booby trapped, so that if someone were on a stepladder and it dropped in their lap, they would drop the whole lot. It was probably done like this on purpose so that the original glassmakers were always called in to fix things.” By restoring the Assembly Rooms in the World Heritage City of Bath to its original splendour, the National Trust hopes that people today, and long into the future, can experience the same ambience that made the Assembly Rooms so popular in the past. Alana Wright, Experience and Visitor Programming Manager, says: “The chandeliers really are the crowning glory of this building, they have been hanging and lighting these rooms for over 250 years, and we hope they will still be here in another 250 years.” Conserving the chandeliers will maintain their legacy as groundbreaking original designs, specifically commissioned for Bath Assembly Rooms. They will be reinstalled with a 21st century innovation - using lightbulbs that resemble the original candlelight. Once this 18-month restoration of the entire building is complete, it will be more accessible so that everyone can enjoy its beauty and history.
