"The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin" by Beatrix Potter is a charming children's story about the consequences of impertinence (and perhaps also laziness). Nutkin and his brother and cousins want to collect nuts on Old Brown's island. All except Nutkin understand the importance of being respectful and asking permission to forage on the owl's property. Every day for six days, the squirrels respectfully ask the old owl for permission to collect nuts. To honour the owl for granting his permission, they take him a different gift each day. Unfortunately, Nutkin doesn't bother to participate in this respectful ritual. Nutkin, from the very first day, taunts Old Brown with riddles and disrespectful songs. By the sixth day, Nutkin has become so impertinent that he throws himself against Brown's head in a disrespectful display of physical familiarity.
