Police are still searching for clues to who may have aided the gunman.Witnesses say the gunman, Seifeddine Rezgui, was dropped off at the Port el-Kantaoui beach by a small boat or jet-ski around 11:55 a.m. Rezgui then walked along the beach with a Kalashnikov rifle hidden in a parasol as he chatted with people. He is believed to have been identifying British and European targets and warning Tunisians to leave.At 12:05 p.m., he opened fire—first on a paraglider, then on tourists lounging on the beach in front of the Imperial Marhaba Hotel. Witnesses say some resort staff formed a human barricade to protect Western tourists.By 12:10 tourists were taking cover inside the Imperial Marhaba Hotel but were being stalked by the gunman who reloaded several times during the attack. He exited the hotel around 12:20.The 23-year-old was shot and killed by police in the street near the hotel around 12:30. The attack left 39 people dead and 36 people injured. Rafik Chelli, a senior interior ministry official, said the gunman was unknown to authorities and not on any watchlist of potential jihadists.
