Billed as “Mortal Enemies”, Riddick Bowe takes on arch rival and his one time Olympic conqueror; the hard punching Jorge Luis Gonzalez as “Big Daddy” makes the 1st defense of his WBO Heavyweight Title. Their rivalry goes back to 1987 where Gonzalez outpointed Bowe in the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. Going into the fight, Bowe had a record of 36(30)-1 while Gonzalez was still unbeaten at 23(22)-0. Gonzalez was a stellar amateur with a record of 220(169)-13, and had notables wins over Tyrell Biggs, Craig Payne, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis and the legendary Teofilio Stevenson. He was a 2 time Gold Medalist at Super Heavyweight at the Pan American Games of 1983 and 1987. In 1991, 26 year old Gonzalez defected and made his professional debut in the United States; winning via TKO3. From then on till March 1995, he racked up 23 straight wins mostly against lightly regarded opposition. His most notable win was a TKO10 over a past prime former world heavyweight contender, Renaldo Snipes in November 1993. In November 1992, Riddick Bowe became the 1st man to defeat the legendary Evander Holyfield; winning the IBF, WBA and WBC Heavyweight Titles via UD. In 1993, he picked up 2 knockout wins over Jesse Ferguson and Michael Dokes. Bowe and Holyfield would collide in a rematch in 1993, where a heavily undertrained Bowe lost an MD and was relieved of his WBA & IBF Heavyweight Titles. However, the fight was most memorable for the infamous “fan man” incident where parachutist James Miller flew into the ring using a powered paraglider during the 7th round, resulting in a huge commotion with the bout delayed for a long time due to efforts to restore order. In August 1994, Bowe fought Buster Mathis Jr. to an NC as Bowe landed a big right hand while Mathis Jr. was down; knocking him out cold. In December of the same year, he picked up another win by outpointing Larry Donald to bag the WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Title. Bowe was boycotted by most of the major sanctioning bodies due to his action of throwing the WBC belt into a bin during a press conference. The WBC proceeded to strip Bowe of the title and awarded it to it’s No. 1 contender, Lennox Lewis. It was largely seen as an attempt for Bowe and his team to avoid facing the mandatory Lewis. Due to the boycotts, Bowe’s only shot for a world title was to take on reigning WBO Heavyweight Champion; the quick handed, hard hitting “Dancing Destroyer” Herbie Hide in March 1995. In a grueling battle, an out of shape Bowe scored 7 knockdowns to attain a KO6 win against a very game Hide who managed to hurt Bowe badly on many occasions. At one point, he even had Bowe out on his feet but unable to finish. Bowe’s next fight would be his 1st defense of his WBO title against No. 1 contender and former Olympic rival Jorge Luis Gonzalez. Both fighters scuffled and exchanged tirades of insults at one another in 2 heated press conferences, and in one of them Bowe threw a glass at Gonzalez. While Gonzalez was undefeated with a stellar amateur record, he was largely untested as a pro. Thus, this fight was a chance to prove himself as a force in the division. Gonzalez had a notorious reputation of toying with his opponents; taking his time to knock them out. However, Gonzalez had only beaten lightly regarded oppositions despite his antics. Gonzalez proved to be a limited and highly undeveloped fighter, as Bowe hammered him through 6 one sided rounds before knocking him out. Bowe gave Gonzalez a taste of his own medicine; taking his time to punish Gonzalez before finally finishing him off. Gonzalez was knocked down and out for the 1st time in his pro career. Gonzalez’s career goes on a downward spiral after this loss; going 8-7 until his retirement in 2002. His final record stood at 31(27)-8. After dismantling Gonzalez, Bowe takes on Evander Holyfield in a rubber match. He was knocked down in the 5th round and was in danger of being stopped. However, Bowe with sheer determination scored a surprise knockdown in the 8th round with a thunderous short right hand. In a valiant effort, Holyfield beats the count, but Bowe follows up with more right hands as Joe Cortez halts the bout. With his knockout of Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe was regarded as the No. 1 Heavyweight in the world at that point.
