Media conference with Mayor and Governor of NYC

(12 Sep 2001) 1. Wide shot of presser, zooms in on Giuliani 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rudolph Giuliani, New York Mayor: "The police and the fire and the emergency services have been trying to evacuate as many people as possible, we've lost several other buildings and we have no sense yet of the enormity of it - with regard to the number of people that we've lost." 3. Set-up of George Pataki 4. SOUNDBITE (English) George Pataki, Governor of New York State "The goal right now is very simple - everything that can be done to save every single life is being done - and we will continue to make sure that that is a priority." 5. Set-up of Barry Mawn 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Barry Mawn, Assistant Director of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) New York Office "When we get to a point that we can, the immediate search or preliminary search, will be for the black boxes from the two planes here. We have NTSB (National Transport and Safety Board) coming in to assist us in that regard. Further, may be subsequent briefings if we are not successful, we'll have pictures - the mayor will have pictures - to show in an aid to assist us in that effort." 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Rudolph Giuliani, New York Mayor: "I thank God that I'm safe. I feel terrible for the people that we lost, some of who I talked to just 15 minutes before we lost them. And the city's going to survive, we're going to get through it. It's going to be a very, very difficult time. I don't think we yet know the pain we're going to feel when we find out who we lost. But the thing we have to focus on now is getting the city through this and surviving and being stronger for it." 8. Wide shot of New York Police Department spokesman 9. SOUNDBITE (English) New York Police Department spokesman (unnamed): "Our rescue efforts have really been hindered because of this structural damage of the buildings. We want to get in there, we want to rescue the people that are alive and well in there, but also, we have to do it safely. We've had an enormous problem with the structural damage because buildings keep collapsing." 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Rudolph Giuliani, New York Mayor: "My heart goes out to all the people effected by this - they don't deserve this, these are innocent people. This is a horrible attack. When you think of the sneak attacks that have been perpetrated - there's no military purpose of this, this is cowardly, this was awful, this was horrible. And again the people of the city of New York are going to demonstrate, as we have when we've been tested before, that we're stronger than these barbarians." 11. Mid shot of Giuliani and others leaving presser STORYLINE: New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has called Tuesday's destruction of the World Trade Centre "cowardly" and the perpetrators "barbarians." Speaking at a news conference Giuliani said he felt terrible for people killed in the attack. He said he'd only spoken to some 15 minutes previously. As well as countless city workers, many emergency personnel must also have been killed when the buildings collapsed. Standing alongside Giuliani during the news conference Governor of New York State, George Pataki, said the priority now was to save as many lives as possible. Assistant Director of Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) New York Office, Barry Mawn, said that as soon as possible they will be searching for the hijacked plane's black boxes. Aviation black boxes hold details about events inside an aircraft's cock-pit and may help in identifying who the hijackers were.
