GSMA Innovation Fund Startups: Dayaxa Frankincense

In Somaliland's frankincense resin harvesters in the Sanaag region do not set prices for their resin harvests, allowing only the traders to take advantage of the supply chain value. Climate change impacts and lack of incentives for farmers, has led to unsustainable overharvesting of frankincense trees to maximise their incomes in the short-term. Through their social enterprise initiative, Dayaxa is creating a positive impact on the lives of farmers and their families by investing back into these communities. Dayaxa Frankincense works with farmers (including women harvesters) in Somaliland, to harvest sustainable produce, secure fair pricing and improve living standards of farming communities. The GSMA Innovation Fund grant was used by Dayaxa to improve earnings for resin farmers. Their mobile blockchain mobile app traces resin sources, enabling them to offer good pricing to harvesters. The GSMA grant was also used to build a tree health mobile app to enable traceability and ecological monitoring of Frankincense trees. Dayaxa has also established a community-based frankincense tree nursery to create opportunities for community-based forestry and plantations. Dayaxa Frankincense is one of the startups supported by the GSMA Innovation Fund for Climate Resilience and Adaptation, which was launched in 2022. This initiative is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and is supported by the GSMA and its members.
