Welcome to Alexander-X1 - Your Portal to the Past! The Crusader March to Jaffa and the Battle with Saladin In 1191, after the capture of Acre, King Richard the Lionheart of England knew that to advance towards Jerusalem, he needed to secure the port of Jaffa. With Saladin determined to prevent the Crusaders from retaking Jerusalem, Richard led his army along the coast towards Jaffa, taking meticulous care to manage the march through harsh conditions. Despite the challenges, including constant skirmishes with Saladin's forces, Richard maintained discipline within his ranks, ensuring his troops’ well-being with careful water and rest management. Saladin, aware of the Crusaders’ approach, eventually committed his full forces to halt their progress. As the two armies clashed in the dense forests of Palestine, the battle became a critical moment in the Third Crusade. Saladin's forces, largely cavalry, engaged the Crusaders in repeated skirmishes. The Crusaders held strong under pressure, waiting for the right moment to launch a decisive charge. When the moment arrived, Richard ordered his knights to charge, catching Saladin's forces off guard. After a fierce battle, the Crusaders managed to break through, forcing Saladin’s army into retreat. Though the Crusaders suffered significant losses, Saladin’s army suffered far greater casualties, with 7,000 dead. Despite the victory, Saladin was able to regroup, and while the Crusaders ultimately failed to retake Jerusalem, the Treaty of Jaffa led to a three-year truce, allowing Christian pilgrims to return to Jerusalem.
