POLISH AND RUSSIAN FANS IN RUNNING BATTLES, ARRESTS

(12 Jun 2012) Football fans clashed with riot police in the Polish capital Warsaw on Tuesday night ahead of the crucial match between Poland and Russia in the Euro 2012 football tournament. A large crowd of what appeared to be Polish fans faced off against a line of riot police. A number of fans threw objects at the police - including chairs, flares and bottles. The police responded with tear gas and water cannons. There were several running battles between fans and police, who made several arrests. The violence came shortly after Russian and Polish fans, some of them masked, clashed on the sidelines of a march in Warsaw by Russian fans. An Associated Press TV reporter earlier witnessed Polish fans attacking Russians, who responded violently. About 5-thousand Russian fans marched to the National Stadium to show their support for their national team before it plays Poland in a Euro 2012 match on Tuesday night. Russian fans want to inspire their team, but also to celebrate a national holiday, Russia Day, that marks the 1990 declaration of Russia's independence from the Soviet Union. Warsaw authorities said they saw no reason to deny the fans' request to hold the march, but had asked them to observe the law. With centuries of hostility between the two nations, to many Poles the sight of Russians marching in a group on their streets would be provocative.
