Everyday Grammar TV: Grammar and the Economy - Prices, Part 3

Dr. J: Hi John! What’s on your mind today? JR: I was thinking about our recent lessons on price discussions. Dr. J: Did we make a mistake? JR: No, not that I know of. But we did not cover how we talk about prices in the past. We only discussed the present. Dr. J: Let’s start with a quick reminder. In previous lessons, we talked about one of the most important elements of price discussions – the words “how much.” JR: For example: How much does this cost? How much is this? Dr. J: But what happens if we talk about the past? JR: We use the same basic structures. But we make small changes. “How much does this cost?” Becomes this: “How much did this cost?” Or: “How much is this? Becomes this: “How much was this?” JR: We might compare these changes to an actor in a film. The actor might wear a different costume or clothing in different scenes. The actor is the same, but his or her appearance changes. Dr. J: In the same way, we might say that verbs wear different kinds of clothing in their present or past forms. DR. J: Let’s end this lesson with a quiz. Ask about the price of a cell phone. Be sure to form your question in the past tense. Here is one possible answer: How much did this cell phone cost?
