Mormon crickets invade Nevada elementary school

Mormon crickets were caught on video invading an elementary school in Nevada on May 13, 2024. This was the scene at Jesse Hill Elementary School in Reno, Nevada. A swarm of mormon crickets could be seen crawling over the exterior of the school and on the sidewalks around it. The bugs are native to the western states and are not true crickets but rather a type of katydid. According to the Nevada Department of Agriculture, they emerge in the spring and are usually gone by early August. The bugs typically move in and out of an area in a couple of days, but they can wreak havoc when they take over. They eat their way through crops, causing damage and economic loss for farmers. They also create road hazards when pavement becomes slick after they are crushed under tires. Mormon crickets cannot fly, but they are very mobile.
