Rules of The Parlee: #4 My name is Grealin C. Kimbrough and today we are going to Parlee about what it means to Frame the Narrative. Like with most issues in life, Framing the Narrative is neither inherently positive or negative as it comes down to its usage. Framing the Narrative is where and individual uses information usually facts, figures and anecdotes to subjectively prove their position. The notable aspect of framing the narrative is it generally fails to take into account mitigating information and facts which can potentially disprove your position. Some illustrations of Framing the Narrative. The great orator, self-idol and self-promoter Mr. Kanye West. The most recent and perhaps most stark example is Mr. Kanye West’s pontification on Mrs. Beyonce deserving the Grammy for Album of the year. Mr. Wests description narrative and conclusion regarding the greatness of Mrs. Beyoncé’s album is not without merit but without even bothering to hear her competition it leaves the realm of simply uncouth as he recklessly chooses to frame a self-serving narrative. Our second illustration is every last one of us. This applies to every one of us, it’s how we write our resume, it’s how we interview for a job. Do you notice every resume makes you, me and the world a superstar; how every software engineer is on the cusp of being Bill Gates according to the narrative framed on the resume? Our resume says nothing of our work ethic, says nothing about commitment who else helped may have contributed to your accomplishments. An interview is no different as we highlight our strong suits while trying to ignore shortcomings. Again, we maintain there is nothing inherently good or bad about framing the narrative but within the confines of honest discussion, truthful discourse there is usually no room for framing the narrative. When we Parlee about concepts or ideas, especially if they are salient we aim for a fact-based discussion, it makes relating and understanding easier while making discourse, insight and solution far more feasible. Just something to keep in mind folk’s now Let’s Parlee. Keep an eye out for next week's video (the week of April 13, 2014), the first non Rules related discussion and our first topic for a true Parlee.
