Respecting sex worker rights | Marion Little | TEDxPearsonCollegeUWC

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Marion introduces listeners to the unconditional, grass-roots, peer-based work of PEERS. Her talk draws upon "(Understanding) Sex Work: a health research and community partnership", a series of national research projects from the Centre for Addictions Research BC at the University of Victoria. She addresses key issues facing sex workers in Canada today. She also dispels some common misconceptions about sex work in Canada and invites listeners to consider what all this means if we truly value dignity, respect, equal justice, and human rights in Canada. Marion Little is the Executive Director for PEERS Victoria, a registered Canadian charity providing peer-to-peer street outreach and drop-in centre supports for over 500 current and former sex workers. An Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria, Marion also teaches courses in Ethics and Reflective Practice, Collaborative Leadership, and Non-profit Management. Her Master’s thesis “Total Honesty/Total Heart” evaluates Nonviolent Communication training for teen mothers. Marion is dedicated to fostering community wellness, social justice, and safe sanctuary. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
