(20 Mar 2014) German artist Ron Mueck had his first exhibit open in Latin America on Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro's Museum of Modern Art. The exhibit which runs through 1 June, features 9 intensely real looking sculptures, some of which were specifically made for this show. The sculpture titled "Couple under an umbrella" is considered a showstopper for its large size and detail. Meters away, the much smaller "Youth" sculpture of a stabbed young man might make some visitors cringe. In the corner of the exhibit hall, there's a sculpture of a giant dead chicken hanging from the ceiling, with only a few feathers left on its body. Mueck is a German native raised in Australia whose sculptures are entirely hand-made from the base of the body to the detail of the wrinkles and hair. Each of Mueck's sculptures take anywhere from six months to several years to complete as he meticulously adds every single detail in a person's face, hair, nails and eyes. The sculptures are so perfectly human-looking, visitors feel the urge to touch them to see if in fact they are alive. "He makes very few pieces, very slowly. As Lucien Freud once said, he only makes masterpieces," said British art collector Anthony d'Offay who is Mueck's first and only art dealer, selling his sculptures to museums and art collectors around the world. This same exhibit was shown in Paris and attracted a record number of 300,000 visitors.
