Using Microsoft Word and File Format Standards in a STEM Journal Production Workflow XML is a well-established technology within the production workflows of most high-value publication. Within the world of Science, Technical, Engineering and Medical (STEM) journal production, for example, the JATS XML format is dominant. Since Microsoft Office 97, the default file format of Office applications has also been XML-based. This has opened the opportunity for preparing documents in Microsoft Word and using standards-based tooling to transform their saved XML representation into other “flavours” for onward production. This presentation will detail how this has been achieved in the case of one such STEM journal publisher.
