Tremendous back and forth action by both fighters, where power punches are traded throughout the six round battle particularly the right hand. Not many jabs were thrown by either man, as both elected to trade power shots resulting in a light welterweight firefight between two hard punchers. This fight was for the vacant WBA Light Welterweight strap where Ortiz and Maidana entered the fight as the No. 3 and No. 2 WBA Light Welterweight contenders respectively. Both fighters had similar records at the time of this fight; Maidana at 25-1 with 24 wins coming by way of knockout and Ortiz at 24-1-1 with 19 knockout victories. After this bout, Victor Ortiz had a mix of success and downfalls with notable wins over Andre Berto, Vivian Harris and Nate Campbell while suffering losses against Andre Berto (rematch), Luis Collazo, Josesito Lopez and notably against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a controversial outcome. Maidana would go on to rack up wins against Jesus Soto Karass, Victor Cayo, Erik Morales, DeMarcus Corley and perhaps his most notable win; a one sided beatdown of Adrien Broner, where Maidana entered the fight as a huge underdog and scored two knockdowns en route to a clear UD win.
