Dozens of people crowded around a petite humanoid police robot dressed in a high-vis police vest on Wednesday as it patrolled the streets of Shenzhen. Footage shows several humanoids walking, moving their arms and learning other movements during its testing phase at a Shenzhen-based robotics company. Shenzhen Anluo Technology vice president Xiao Jianwei said the company aims to "use humanoid robots to replace manpower in certain cybersecurity operation jobs", emphasising on positions that require round the clock shifts. Nanshan District's Industry and Information Technology Bureau deputy director Zhang Simin claimed that the humanoid robot industry chain in the district has surpassed 40 billion Chinese yuan (over 5.5 billion US dollars) and logged an estimated 20 percent year-on year increase in 2024. Shenzhen's Nanshan District, which is considered to be a focal point for high-tech industries, has over 200 humanoid robot-related enterprises. Developed by Shenzhen tech startup EngineAI, the PM01 humanoid robot stands at 138 cm, weighs 40 kg, and boasts 24 degrees of freedom, enabling it to perform a variety of complex actions. It can travel at speeds of up to 2 metres per second and features a 320-degree rotating motor at its waist, offering two walking modes: mechanical and human-like natural gaits.
