Born on September 9, 1950, in Hobart, Oklahoma, he began his career as an assistant sports information director at the University of Oklahoma in 1971. He later served as editor of the Hobart Democrat-Chief newspaper and spent 11 years with the Big Eight Conference. In 1989, Hancock became the first full-time director of the NCAA Men's Final Four, a position he held until 2002. He then joined the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) in 2005 and was named its executive director in 2009. In 2012, Hancock was appointed as the inaugural executive director of the College Football Playoff (CFP), where he was instrumental in establishing the playoff system, overseeing media rights, and managing the selection committee. Under his guidance, the CFP expanded to a 12-team format after the 2023–24 season. Hancock announced his retirement effective February 1, 2025, after more than a decade leading the CFP. His contributions have left a lasting impact on college sports administration.
