(KUTV) Charles Gillard, 42, loves his job. "I like working here at Smiths," he says. And he's very dedicated whether he's restocking shelves, or working the cash register to check customers out. Watching him work it's hard to believe that Gillard is actually legally blind. His right eye is a glass eye and his left eye gives him just enough sight to see out of and function in his work. "I have to look both sides to bag [groceries]," said Gillard. That's why it's also hard to believe that Gillard the grocery worker is also Gillard the one-time world dart champion. "People were like, ‘No way he can't do this,’ and then people were shocked," he said of his championship days. Gillard's glory days were from 2002 to 2005 when he played with the best dart players in the world and placed in the World Team Dart Championship competition in Las Vegas. His highest ranking was 5th place. in 2005 he made the front cover of the competition Magazine. At that time he says his sight was even worse in his left eye. He says he couldn't even read the score. "I had to ask what the score is because I couldn't see," said Gillard. "People were saying, ‘How do you do it with one eye?’ " That was many years ago. Now this one eyed dart player is hoping for a comeback story. "I want to go back and play darts and travel around the world and play against anybody who wants to play," said Gillard. He admits right now, "I'm a little rusty." But he says he's anxious to start training again and try and get his throw back. His secret weapon? Listening to the song “Believe” by Cher. He says that puts him in the Zone. "Because I believe that I can do it. That's my goal and that's what I want." Gillard has overcome a lot to get where he is at in life. He was born with cataracts and says he lost his sight in his one eye after a failed surgery when he was 7 years old. "I had to suffer all my life through school. I had to get held back for two years in school because I couldn't see. I couldn't read, I couldn't do English. I couldn't do any homework." He realizes that getting back his game is not going to be easy. But his many trophies and accomplishments in life also didn't come without a price. In order to make it back to Vegas, he has to start scoring some serious points in local competitions. He's hoping to compete next month in Utah's state darting competition. That means he's going to have to start practicing several hours a day. But he believes he can accomplish his goals. "I'm thinking positive not negative and I want to challenge and say that other people can do it to like me."
