I'm so excited to officially welcome my amazing daughter, Lorie, to the channel in a more prominent role, and what better way to kick things off than with a classic zombie flick? For our debut, we plunged into 2004's Dawn of the Dead, a film I hadn't seen in years, and one Lorie was experiencing for the very first time. Directed by the visionary Zack Snyder (300, Man of Steel, Zack Snyder's Justice League) and written by the incredibly talented James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy series, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker), this remake of George A. Romero's horror classic follows a diverse group of survivors, including Sarah Polley (Alias Grace, My Life Without Me), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Mission: Impossible franchise), Jake Weber (Medium, American Gothic), and Mekhi Phifer (ER, 8 Mile), as they take refuge in a deserted shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse. While Lorie really enjoyed the fast-paced action and intense moments, she surprisingly found it not as scary as she anticipated. What truly caught us both off guard was how emotional it got, even bringing her to tears! This movie was a fantastic start to our new series, offering plenty of thrills, a few jumps, and unexpectedly, some genuine heart. We loved discussing the characters' choices, the practical effects, and how it holds up two decades later. Get ready for more mother-daughter movie critiques, because if our first reaction is any indication, it's going to be a wild ride!
