Interest groups can represent narrow interests (i.e., single-issue groups) or the broad interests of an entire demographic. Either way, their goal is to get policy makers to pass laws favorable to their interests. They do this by raising money, educating voters, and lobbying law makers. However, not all interest groups have equal access to policy makers. Those that are well funded have an easier time gaining an audience with representatives. Additionally, the effectiveness of interest groups can be affected by the free-rider problem.
