NGUNG LAI, [Means Stop in Vietnamese]: The Entire Coastline Of Vietnam Would Now Be Patrolled (4) – NGUNG LAI, [Nghĩa Là Dừng Lại Trong Tiếng Việt]: Toàn Bộ Bờ Biển Việt Nam Sẽ Được Tuần Tra (4) CHIẾN TRANH VIỆT NAM: QLVNCH & ĐỒNG MINH (1967): NGUNG LAI, [Means Stop in Vietnamese]: The Entire Coastline Of Vietnam Would Now Be Patrolled (4) – NGUNG LAI, [Nghĩa Là Dừng Lại Trong Tiếng Việt]: Toàn Bộ Bờ Biển Việt Nam Sẽ Được Tuần Tra (4) With a third division added in early 1966, the entire coastline of Vietnam would now be patrolled, we’re told at mark 18:40, from the Cambodian border to the 17th Parallel. In the first year of the operation, 250 tons of equipment was stopped from reaching the Viet Cong. In addition, the Coast Guard captured or destroyed 22 enemy junks and two steel-hull vessels, and killed, wounded, or captured 100 Viet Cong, without damage to any American ships. “Most important of all, the sea lanes along the South Vietnamese coast were effectively closed to the enemy,” it is stated at mark 24:15. Well the days began turning into 19:11 weeks and these weeks into months and 19:14 the coastal surveillance force was 19:16 making operation Market time pay 19:18 off. The new Division number 13 arrived 19:22 early in 19:23 1966. It was a happy 19:27 occasion. 19:29 Now Coast Guard 82f Footers would be on 19:31 patrol with the US Navy and South 19:33 Vietnamese vessels along the entire 19:36 Coastline from the Cambodian border to 19:39 the 17th parallel. 19:42 [Music] 19:45 By this time a number of 19:47 Cutters had fought engagements with 19:49 enemy vessels and had intercepted 19:51 supplies and weapons being smuggled to 19:53 the Vietcong. Many of them of communist 19:56 Chinese origin. In fact, in the first year 20:00 we prevented 250 tons of equipment from 20:03 getting into enemy hands. We were 20:05 effectively cutting off the coastal and 20:07 River routes into the atong strongholds, 20:10 and the Communists were being forced to 20:12 turn to land transport for their 20:14 supplies. So we kept at it each cutter 3 20:17 days out on patrol and in for one day 20:21 five times over. Even when the weather 20:23 was so lousy, we knew no one in his right 20:26 mind except us of course would be out at 20:29 [Music] 20:31 Sea then mercifully we could come in to 20:34 take that 5-day break before starting 20:36 the cycle all over 20:39 [Music] 20:46 again. Those breaks gave us a chance to 20:48 unwind a little. Some of us hurried to 20:51 undergo a bit of therapeutic treatment 20:53 at the native 20:54 Bros (bistros). Others would help raise the level 20:56 of the economy by patronizing the native 21:05 [Music] 21:13 emporiums. Of course all of us kept the 21:15 local service establishments 21:27 busy. 21:37 Occasionally some of us would even get 21:39 to see something of this country. we' 21:40 come so far to help 21:51 defend. Often while we relaxed before the 21:54 next round of patrols maintenance Crews 21:57 back on the division Mother Ship were 21:59 busy keeping the 82f Footers in 22:06 shape in just one year in operation 22:09 Market Time, we were giving the engines 22:11 the equivalent of 8 years of peacetime 22:14 use. But they could be overhauled right 22:17 on the spot by the Navy and Coast Guard 22:19 crew on the Mother ship and be ready to 22:21 go once more in time for the next 22:26 Patrol. 22:28 Underway again. And we found ourselves 22:31 helping the war effort in a number of 22:35 ways. Our guns were sometimes called upon 22:38 to support friendly forces 22:40 ashore. The forward air control aircraft 22:43 could see the enemy we couldn't, but we 22:46 just kept firing hitting the area where 22:48 the spotter plane told us it would do 22:50 the most 22:51 [Music] 22:56 good. 23:02 [Music] 23:09 We were available to help South 23:11 Vietnamese fighting teams into battle 23:16 zones. But our main job was still 23:19 searching for men and materials being 23:21 smuggled to the enemy. And we kept at it 23:25 day and 23:26 night. 23:30 This kind of Duty meant, we sometimes had 23:32 to hold worship Services 23:34 underway. Sure our altar was built out of 23:37 ammo boxes. And our older boys weren't 23:40 particularly dressed for the occasion. 23:42 And only the few men not on watch could 23:45 attend at any one...
