JLF2016 - Booker Prize winner Marlon James on being Jamaican, Black and Gay

In a moving essay in the New York TImes, Marlon James once wrote about his fears of being outed as gay in Christian, suburban Jamaica. He believed that his voice would 'reveal him as a fag'. So he simply stopped talking. That was many years ago. And he's now a Booker Prize winner living in the U.S. But he's also still Jamaican, black and gay. And that isn't an easy legacy to carry. In conversation at the Jaipur Literature Festival, he talks about the weight of that legacy. He talks about the human power of empathy and the importance of "complicating dialogue". Along with his fandom for Rihanna, leaving the church, and young love at age eight Produced and edited by Andrew Clarance
