Transatlantic solidarity in action: Addressing the needs of refugees from Ukraine

09 June 2022 - Policy Dialogue organised in cooperation with the US Mission to the European Union Speakers: Adam Hunter, Deputy Assistant Secretary, US Department of Homeland Security; Giulio Di Blasi, Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Ylva Johansson, European Commission; Sarah Cross, Deputy Assistant Secretary, US Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration; Sophie Magennis, Head of Policy and Legal Support, UNHCR Representation for EU Affairs Moderator: Silvia Carta, Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre The war in Ukraine and the large-scale displacement crisis that followed represent new challenges for transatlantic solidarity. This online Policy Dialogue, organised in cooperation with the United States Mission to the EU, provides an opportunity to take stock of the EU’s and US’ commitment to mobilise humanitarian aid and offer protection to people displaced from Ukraine. The event looked at the policy, legal, and operational questions underpinning the pledges made so far. How can transatlantic partners ensure the complementarity of their efforts? What more could be done to guarantee sufficient reception capacity and support upon arrival? And what are the shared challenges the EU and US will face in maintaining the present political momentum and welcoming attitude towards refugees from Ukraine?
