Nepal stops broadcasting 42 Indian TV channels

Nepal’s cable federation declared today that they would block Indian channels from 10 a.m. on Tuesday to protest against India’s unofficial economic blockade. “This is to protest against the blockade.” Sunil Kumar Lama, the organization’s general secretary, said on Monday. He declined to say how long the suspension would last. According to Federation of Nepal Cable Television Association, Sushil Parajuli, Hindi channels have already been stopped in cities of Chitwan, Pokhara and Mahendranagar. "We received pressure from a few parties and public to stop broadcast of Indian channels." Parajuli said. India has been critical of Nepal's new constitution which was the first ‘secular and democratic’ constitution signed by Nepal’s four rival parties; Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal, Unified Communist Party of Nepal and the Madhesi Jana Adhikar Forum-Loktantrik who have divided the country into six provinces. The move has began after a former Maoist splinter party initiated a campaign against Indian movies and TV channels in Nepal. The president of the Nepal Cable Television Association told BBC Nepali the "black-out will be indefinite". Sudhir Parajuli said they decided to stop the broadcast of the Indian channels as "India has been intruding in the national sovereignty of Nepal," the PTI agency said.
