DIABETES UPDATE 7: which fruits can a diabetic have ?(in HINDI)

Which fruits can a diabetic take? Fruits are generally mostly carbohydrates. They have very small amounts of amino acids and fats. 80-90% fruit composition is water . They have salts and minerals like iron , lime , magnesium , potash and phosphorus . They have varying amounts of acids . citrus fruits like lemon , oranges have citric acid . Apples and peaches have malic acid and grape tartaric acids . Carbohydrates in fruits are cellulose (which make up the fibrous part) and levulose (fructose). But nearly all fruits have glucose in varying proportions . Many have glucose combined with fructose in fruits in the form of sucrose . Some fruits have less glucose and /or sucrose and hence blood sugar may not increase much Some other fruits have higher proportions of glucose and sucrose and consuming these will increase blood sugars to a larger extent. Based on the response of the rise in blood sugars , i have categorised fruits in to three groups FIRST GROUP: diabetics may consume these in moderate quantities (100-150 gms/day) JAMUN INDIAN BERRIES - KARVANDA , BOR, BER . APPLES PERU (GUAVA) AMLA POMEGRANATES CHERRIES AVOCADO BERRIES - BLUE BERRIES , RASPBERRIES , STRAWBERRIES PRUNES TOMATOES APRICOTS ORANGES PLUMS PEACH KIWI ANJEER SECOND GROUP :diabetics can consume , but less often in small quantities(100-150GMS ) CUSTARD APPLES BANANAS MUSKMELON PINE APPLE WATER MELON DATES PAPAYA THIRD GROUP : consume very occasionally or avoid GRAPES , DRIED GRAPES ( RAISINS) MANGOES JACKFRUIT Its better , however , to have 100-150gms of fruits per day. Fruit juices will have 2-3 fruits in one glass of juice and hence would be very high in sugar content. So , have fruits instead of fruit juices Finally , each diabetic is different and individual advise about fruits must be sought from the diabetologist handling your case .
