Bill Bruford's Earthworks - Modern Folk (Live In Santiago, Chile 2002)

Visit Bill’s online store for exclusive and signed items: https://www.shorturl.at/adnpq This was the last date on a short South American tour with Earthworks in 2002. If you’d asked me in about 1972 for a bucket list of things I’d really want to achieve in an upcoming career, I’d have said play the large places (such as Madison Square Garden, NYC, NY; Earls Court Arena, London, UK; the Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA); play the really small but influential places (Ronnie Scott’s, London, UK; Blue Note, NYC, NY, and Tokyo, Japan) and take a band on tour to South America, a wildly unrealistic idea in 1972. I was fortunate indeed to do everything on my list, and this gig in Santiago, Chile was part of it. ‘Modern Folk’ is saxophonist Tim Garland’s composition. As a Grammy award-winning, consummate music writer of dozens of pieces for everything from jazz trio to symphony orchestra, he knows how to engage his colleagues and get them involved in making the thing work. I’d spent some time banging up against the limits of my own compositional abilities, so I drafted Tim into the band not only for his effortless playing, but especially for his writing chops. The trick to successful band leading is to get everyone engaged emotionally; to be invested in the song they’re playing, even if they didn’t write it. In jazz, that’s not so hard on account of the expressive freedom that’s written in as a fundamental of the genre. It may be harder in rock or singer-songwriter material where the support musician tends to be confined to simpler, perhaps more repetitive parts, but not impossible. When I worked for British singer-songwriter Roy Harper on tour and on his album ‘HQ’, his material was just so strong I felt committed anyway, irrespective of my very modest contribution. Drummer Chad Wackerman would tell you the same thing about singer-songwriter James Taylor. The pity here is that the promoter saw fit to ignore our request for an acoustic grand. An expensive piece of kit to hire in, of course, but an insult to the musicians who’ve come half way across the world to play for him. On the upside the excitement is the Chilean audience who were generous to a fault, and whose enthusiasm only made us play better. This whole concert is included in the Earthworks 20CD / 4DVD box set ‘Earthworks Complete’ that includes the band’s entire back catalogue, recorded across its 20-year career.
