Dual-Use Technology And How The Military Uses It

Video timestamps: 0:29-1:02: What exactly is a dual-use technology? 1:03-2:42: What are some examples of innovative technologies categorized as "duel-use"? How did these technologies develop the way that they did? 2:43-3:50: What does the traditional innovation process within the DoD look like? 3:51-5:56: What recent global events made innovation within the DoD hyper-relevant? 5:57-8:00: In light of these recent events, has the traditional innovation process worked? 8:01-10:24: What are some funding and acquisition routes for this type of tech? What changes would you recommend (if any)? 10:25-13:04: If you're a small, innovative company looking to do business within the DoD, what advice would you give? The commercial market innovates products through cutting-edge technology to add value to consumers and solve problems. The Department of Defense looks at ways it can adopt this technology for military usage. Similarly, many commercial companies have also adopted technology developed by the DoD to meet changing consumer needs. So, dual-use technology can go both ways. It can be commercially developed technology adopted by the DoD or it can be publicly funded defense technology adapted for commercial use. This is important because innovation is typically funded by other private or public means like this. Working with companies that can do both means you have a super-charged company that is able to do more for you, faster. Let's look at an example in this post of both. 1. A good example of dual-use technology initially developed in large part by the DoD is the internet itself. It started out as a DARPA research project to connect teams around the world but was eventually adapted to what we see today. 2. A good example of dual-use technology developed by commercial and being transitioned into the DoD ecosystem is sUAS. The commercial sector has done a tremendous job developing sUAS tech for the consumer & enterprise markets, and those profitable entities are transitioning efforts to the DoD now with cutting-edge equipment. Check out Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and their Blue sUAS program to learn more about that. This is a complex subject though, so check out the full video interview with Uzi Ibrahim!
