National Theatre - Tokyo Presents July 2022 Traditional Japanese Dance Performance "Hanagata Meisaku Buyō Kanshōkai" (Star and Masterpiece Traditional Japanese Dance Performance) (Performance Date: July 23, 2022 / Venue: National Theatre Small Theatre) We invite you to enjoy these masterpieces of Kabuki dance – the centerpiece of traditional Japanese dance! Leading performers of the traditional Japanese dance world are gather together for this series of masterpieces that showcase their exquisite techniques and supple forms. This is a wonderful opportunity for both fans of traditional dance as well as those not as familiar with it to more fully learn and appreciate the charms of this beautiful Japanese art. You will not want to miss it! Nagauta "Fujimusume" Fujima Murasaki This Nagauta piece is based on Fujimusume (wisteria maiden), the subject of an Otsu-e (picture from Otsu, Shiga) that was popular during the Edo period. On an impressive stage set featuring a huge pine tree and wisteria flowers, the wisteria spirit dances, piquantly expressing a woman’s colorful heart. This is a masterpiece with varying musical compositions, including elegant dances to the accompaniment of Fujiondo (marching songs of the wisteria) and the use of the hikinuki technique (a quick change of costume).
