And it’s pretty amazing when we can find a deep, well-structured mathematical resemblance in aspects as organic and free as nature. Nature’s patterns are based on math: just look at hexagons, stripes, meanders. Or at the impressive Fibonacci sequence and its relative, the Golden Spiral, a growth rule based on phi. What we see is a sense of harmony and balance that appears incredibly appealing to the eye. But there’s a functional reason behind it. The spirals and numbers arise from a property of growth called self-similarity – the tendency to increase in size but maintain the same overall shape. Nature favours this sequence because it’s the most efficient way to grow strong stable structures, using as little energy as possible.
