#trauma #FAMILY #SCHIZOPHRENIA #tamarahilllpc **DISCLAIMER: This video is only touching the surface of this topic and may only reflect SOME individuals experiencing schizophrenia within an unhealthy family system. Please keep in mind that every individual diagnosed with schizophrenia experiences it differently and may not come from an unhealthy family system. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Schizophrenia (or psychosis) can be a devastating diagnosis for a family. Sometimes that's because the individual may not recognize how they are engaging with others in their relationships, especially during active psychosis or if they have a personality disorder as well. It will take a lot of patience, self-education, and self-preservation to survive. It may also take patience to support someone who may also be toxic or dysfunctional in other ways. Schizophrenia or psychosis can be a "primary" diagnosis for a family member who has the personality traits of a sociopath or narcissist. If someone walked into my office with schizophrenia or psychosis and also displayed traits of a sociopath or narcissist, the diagnosis would be: -Primary: Schizophrenia or psychotic disorder -Secondary: Personality disorder Both of these diagnoses play a role in how the family member engages with other people and functions in their world. In this video, I provide insights on how a family member like this may struggle within the family. I also touch on how they may negatively impact your level of functionality. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO: 0:00 intro 2:09 what schizophrenia (and psychosis) is 3:34 delusions & hallucinations -transient paranoia 5:45 auditory hallucinations with commands 7:32 Olfactory reference syndrome ("false smells") 8:45 delusions that will interfere with your family relationships -example of delusions of grandeur 11:07 delusions of persecution 12:04 Active psychosis in a toxic family 13:29 WHAT YOU MAY NOTICE IN YOUR FAMILY ‐-------------------------------- Further reading: ***Coping with someone with schizophrenia: https://www.everydayhealth.com/hs/sch... ***Schizophrenia: https://aamft.org/Consumer_Updates/Sc... ------------------------- References: 1.
