Escaping the Victim/Persecutor/Rescuer Triangle in Allyship

Effective Allyship doesn’t happen while on the Victim/Persecutor/Rescuer Triangle. But what IS this triangle? It’s a conceptual space that exists within each of us and the cultural spaces we inhabit. The victims are created by the persecutors, and in turn saved by rescuers. But without victims rescuers have nothing to rescue. So the rescuers need to make sure there are enough persecutors to keep a steady supply of victims to rescue and so the merry go round continues. This triangle is a prison. It’s a trap that keeps us all away from effective Allyship. Instead of victims what if we thought of ourselves as warriors? Instead of rescuers what if we were Allies? And what if instead of spending all our energy hunting for persecutors we saw them as they really are— challengers? This little shift in thinking can completely transform your Allyship practice!
